This page contains a brief summary of published research documenting use cases of augmented reality (AR) within the architecture, engineering and construction industry. Applications include locating 2D drawings within corresponding 3D environments, improving registration of digital models to as-built designs, filtering redundant data in increasingly large building information models or precisely locating and checking parts in space.
The first application using AR for in-situ architectural construction tasks dates back to the 1990’s with Webster et al.’s system for assembling space frames from audio, text and graphical instructions. Marker-based systems have been designed for assembling stacked timber structures from unique parts while systems using object tracking or edge detection illustrate that non-uniform masonry structures can be assembled with accuracy and construction time comparable to fully automated robotic processes. Limited exploration of using AR for non-standard tasks such as the visualisation of an in-place digital 3D model for subtractive fabrication with a hand-held CNC mill or robotic end effector have also been demonstrated.
